Your Song

If you don’t already know, I’m a musician. I love music and it has been a huge part of my life for about seven years now. I started playing guitar, singing, and writing songs about seven years ago and it’s taken me places I never thought I’d go. A lot of times I think of life much as I do music. I listen every day to the rhythm of the traffic and I hear the emotions in the voices of every day people. If you listen closely, you can hear the songs of others. Everybody has a song. You have a song, and only you can write it.

Sometimes when I write lyrics I have no idea in what direction I’m headed. I just know I’ve got something to say, and I need to get it out. I’m not even sure where it comes from all the time. Usually it’s easier to write a song late at night when I’m contemplative about life and pain and philosophy. No matter when or how I write it, there is a story behind every song, just as there is a story behind your song. The way you are raised, the people you meet, who your family is, what school you go to, all of these things will affect your life. They will affect how you look at the world. But no matter how your life starts, you can decide how to live it. This is your song to write and no one else’s. You can’t go through life blaming others for the way your life is. We are not always thrown into the best of situations but we have the power to choose how we react to them.

Songwriting can often times be difficult. I get “writers block” and I can’t seem to get inspiration from anywhere. It’s like I have this urging desire to write and nothing is coming out. So I have to be patient. I have to wait for the right time. Life isn’t so different from this. If you’re like me, you’ve been in situations you could not wait to get out of. Whether you put yourself in the situation, like me, or someone else put you there, it’s not where you want to be. You begin to look at your life and you say, “I’m not who I want to be or where I want to be.” You know your dream and you know your passion but you have no idea how to get there. Well, sometimes you just have to be patient.

Remember that no dream is accomplished in one easy step. Often it’s a long grueling process and you have no idea how you get there, you just do. If you want to climb to the top of Mt. Everest, you don’t do it in one jump. You have to climb for hours and hours and be patient. You have to keep focused on the goal while still learning to take baby steps, knowing that eventually you will get there. If you want to achieve your dream or passion, take it one step at a time. Set yourself attainable goals that you can achieve and keep focusing on those goals. You may be in the dark a lot but just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Never give up.

As I’ve said earlier, nobody can write your song for you. Only you can. This is your life and you choose who you want to be. Find out what your passionate about and go do that. Don’t buy into lies about get rich quick schemes and how materials will make you happy because they never will. Do what you were meant to do. If you don’t know what your meant to do, then pray! Find out what you are passionate about. Take it one step at a time and never give up. Keep singing your song. Keep fighting the good fight. One day you will look back and be happy with what you have written.
